UCLA Latin American Institute K-12 Series
Rhythms in Migration: Ongoing Presence of African Influences in Latin American Music
The Latin American Institute continues its commitment to provide a supportive environment to its K-12 community. The LAI is delighted to announce its educators’ series on Latin American musical histories and their profound interconnection with African music roots. The themes are organized by selected countries that sample the integration of African musical instruments, rhythms, and styles in Latin American musical genres over time.
The series will integrate different countries and regions of Latin America, including Mexico, the Caribbean, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. The lectures will feature primarily scholars and professional musicians who will introduce various dimensions and periods of musical cultures and practices of Latin American musical genres. This series will culminate with a three-day in-person professional development hands-on workshop for educators in the summer of 2025.
